Grants from the PPG Foundation recently helped support a science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) family night at Kell Grade
School in Kell, Illinois, and a trip for Kell Grade School 5th- through
8th-graders to the Saint
Louis Science Center and James
S. McDonnell Planetarium in Missouri.
Employees of the local PPG industrial coatings plant in Mount Vernon,
Illinois, requested support for teachers Kacy Franke and Michelle Murphy
through a foundation program that encourages PPG employees to support
educational initiatives in their communities. PPG Production Supervisor
and Operations Engineer Nate Perkins, who sponsored Franke’s grant for
the STEM family night, said, “I’m happy to support a night of fun
science activities for students and their parents. It’s an excellent way
for students to gain an appreciation of learning.”
During Kell Grade School’s STEM family night, 7th-grade student Katie
Murphy, her father Jack Murphy and 7th-grade student Jacob Ware tackled
tabletop challenges (above left), while 7th-grade students Regina and
Sydney Donoho constructed cup towers (above right).
Kell Grade School students (directly above, from left) Dayla Johnson,
Tabitha Sherwin, Raymond Fields, Arizona Sponsellor and David Head
explored activities during their trip to the Saint Louis Science Center,
which Murphy’s grant supported.
