Global armed forces using NSN listing can order PPG sealants without new requests
Chrome-free aerospace sealants by PPG (NYSE:PPG) have received NATO
Stock Numbers (NSN) by the U.K. Ministry of Defence as a standardized
supply material that simplifies ordering. Military personnel can now
order PR-1425CF chrome-free polysulfide windshield and canopy sealant
and PR-2870 non-chrome corrosion-inhibitive (NCCI) sealant by NSN
(National Stock Numbers in the U.S.) without issuing new purchasing
requests.
According to David Best, PPG aerospace sales manager based in Shildon,
England, having NSN status helps ensure continuity of supplies during
the industry transition to chrome-free products.
“PR-1425CF windshield and canopy sealant and PR-2870 NCCI sealant have
advantages over their predecessors in addition to their chrome-free
formulations,” Best said. “Armed forces in the NATO countries as well as
many others that use NSN listing are able to substitute older technology
for newer, cleaner and more advanced materials.”
Designed for use on glass, polycarbonate and acrylic windows, PR-1425CF
sealant is formulated not to cause window surfaces to craze and cures in
less than half the time of predecessor PR-1425 sealant. PPG uses
PR-1425CF sealant on cockpit windows and canopies it produces.
Fast-curing PR-2870 sealant is used for aerodynamic smoothing,
structural surface sealing, fay sealing and pressure fuselage sealing
applications. Designed as a replacement option for PRO-SEAL™ 870
sealant, PR-2870 sealant uses PPG-patented technologies and is qualified
to U.S. Military Specification MIL-PRF-81733. It is the result of PPG’s
collaboration to develop a chrome-free, high-performance
corrosion-inhibitive sealant for a project sponsored by the Strategic
Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP).
Both PPG sealants are NSN listed in Class B for most-common extrusion
and spatula applications, Best said. PR-1425CF Class B2 sealant is NSN
8030 99 7514921 and PR-1425CF Class B1/2 is NSN 8030 99 2939307. PR-2870
Class B2 sealant is NSN 8030 99 3788119 and PR-2870 Class B1/2 is NSN
8030 99 1553404. The Class B2 sealants have a two-hour application life
and cure in 12 hours, while the Class B1/2 sealants have a half-hour
application life and cure in six hours.
