A new video by PPG (NYSE:PPG) describes the quality, time-saving and
waste-reducing benefits of dome-sealing aircraft fuel tank fasteners
with PRC® seal caps instead of extruded wet sealant. The PPG seal
caps are formed and molded from PRC or PRO-SEAL™ aerospace
sealant, and then cured to form a flexible rubber shell. The caps can
also be supplied prefilled by PPG with the same sealant so they arrive
at the customer’s site ready to dome-seal fasteners, eliminating all
sealant mixing and tooling.
According to Jason Boast, PPG sealant segment manager for the Americas,
the video explains how the same sealants customers already use can be
supplied as empty PRC seal caps, which they fill with fresh
sealant, or as prefilled caps, which are shipped frozen for them to thaw
and apply.
“PRC seal caps are formed to fit the fastener, reducing
application time and waste while improving quality and consistency for
operators of all skill levels,” Boast said. “As a result, they can
significantly reduce total fastener sealing costs and improve aircraft
reliability.”
Traditionally, fasteners are sealed by extruding wet sealant onto them,
and then carefully tooling the sealant to meet the required shape and
dimensions, according to Boast. “In this method, it can be difficult to
ensure that the sealant shape and dimensions meet quality requirements,”
he said. “PRCseal caps are simply placed over fasteners, checked
to make sure the wet sealant properly squeezes out around the
circumference of the cap, and then allowed to cure. The design of the
cap ensures the proper shape and dimensions of the sealant.”
Customers have reported that empty PRC seal caps are up to
58 percent faster and premixed and frozen filled caps are up to 90
percent faster than sealing by extruded wet sealant, according to Boast.
PRC seal caps are in use worldwide by manufacturers of
commercial, regional, military and general aviation aircraft.
PPG offers more than 120 sizes of PRC seal caps and also can
supply them in custom sizes and shapes to fit unique fastener
dimensions. The line includes nut plate caps with and without tops as
well.
