Career counseling component expands to 15 top universities

SHANGHAI, China, Dec. 29, 2018 –PPG (NYSE:PPG) recently announced that it granted in excess of RMB 750,000 ($110,000) in scholarships and science and technology innovation funds to more than 200 students from 11 Chinese universities as a part of its 2018 PPG University Talent Power Program. The company also expanded its career counseling services to 15 universities in 2018.

In partnership with nonprofit Give2Asia, PPG established the China scholarship program in 2003 to recognize students who are majoring in chemistry and material-related disciplines and performing at top levels in both academic and practical areas. The number of students receiving scholarships in 2018 nearly doubled from the previous year.

Scholarship recipients from six universities were invited to learn about PPG and its sustainable development efforts during open house events held in 2018 at the company’s manufacturing and research and development centers in Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Suzhou and Kunshan.

“The PPG University Talent Power Program is PPG’s signature initiative to support education in China,” said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, corporate and government affairs, Asia Pacific. “This year, we expanded the depth and breadth of the program by providing more scholarships and career counseling. We also combined the scholarship-granting ceremony with our open house events to enhance interaction between our employees and the students. We hope to provide the talent of tomorrow with a deeper understanding of the coatings industry and establish a clear vision for their future careers.”

PPG held two Career Intelligence Class events at each of the 11 core participating universities in 2018 and four additional Chinese universities: Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Zhejiang University and Tianjin University of Finance and Economics. During the classes, professional mentors from Live2Give provided career counseling services to nearly 2,900 students. The mentors addressed student questions about career development and job hunting and shared their advice on topics that included efficient work practices, teamwork and workplace etiquette.

“The Career Intelligence Class program has been very well received by students and teachers since its launch in 2015,” said Yan. “We conducted additional classes this year and added the four universities to help more students be well prepared for life after graduation. We plan to expand the coverage of this successful program to more universities in the future.”

The 11 other Chinese universities involved with the PPG University Talent Power Program in 2018 were Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, East China University of Science and Technology, Jilin University, Nanjing University, Nanjing Tech University, Nankai University, South China University of Technology, Tianjin University,  Wuhan University of Technology and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
