Advances technical lens education in optical chemistry, coatings, patient communication

PITTSBURGH, July 31, 2025 – PPG (NYSE: PPG) today announced that it is sponsoring a continuing education course designed to teach American Board of Optometry (ABO) certified opticians how to understand and communicate lens performance benefits to the patient.

The course: The Mystery Behind the Lens: Demystifying Monomers and Coatings, educates Approved Technical Level 2 opticians on the science and innovation behind ophthalmic lenses, from the development of lens monomers to the casting of lens blanks. Participants will be trained to explain key lens technologies and articulate the performance benefits of optical materials, helping patients to make more informed eyewear choices.

“PPG is proud to support educational initiatives that showcase the science behind our innovations and strengthen the knowledge base of the professionals who rely on our science and products every day,” said Raymond Hudack, PPG global business director, Optical Monomers and Coatings, Specialty Products. “This course is a clear investment in the future of eyewear, the workforce that drives it forward and the millions of people who benefit from prescriptive and protective eyewear.”

Drawing on PPG’s decades of experience in optical materials science, the course utilizes the PPG CR-39® lens monomer and PPG TRIVEX® lens material to highlight the role of monomer chemistry, proprietary coating formulations and thermal casting processes in producing high-performance ophthalmic lenses.

Developed and presented by Deborah Kotob, ABOM, director for education and training development at Jobson Optical Group, the course will educate ABO-certified opticians about:

  • The development of ophthalmic lens monomers
  • Lens casting
  • How a monomer becomes a finished or semi-finished lens blank
  • How to communicate the performance benefits of ophthalmic lens materials to the patient

“PPG has long been recognized as a pioneer in optical-grade polymers and coatings,” said Hudack. “This educational partnership reinforces our commitment to push the industry forward through technical excellence, knowledge sharing and support for emerging professionals.”

The course is available on Pro to Pro, 20/20 magazine’s resource center for education and learning, and can be accessed here.
