October 24, 2006

Air Dry Waterborne Adhesion Promoter Offers Forward Compliance with Regulations

TROY, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has been named a finalist for the 2007 Automotive News PACE Award. The 13th annual PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers Contribution to Excellence) Award is presented by Microsoft, SAP, Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC Inc.) and Automotive News.

A five-time winner of the PACE Award, PPG is a finalist for its Air Dry Waterborne Adhesion Promoter, which is being commercialized in North America on plastic fascias. This product is the first of its kind to combine the benefits of zero hazardous air pollutants, ultra-low volatile organic compounds and superior physical properties in an adhesion promoter that does not require baking prior to topcoat application.

Formulated to comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the Air Dry Waterborne Adhesion Promoter by PPG addresses many challenges facing automotive manufacturers. In addition to exceeding the requirements of upcoming Maximum Achievable Control Technology legislation, the product helps improve process efficiency by eliminating the need for promoter baking, reducing overall topcoat usage and reducing waste and paint sludge. Moreover, it provides more robust fuel resistance of topcoated parts, as well as improved high-pressure car wash adhesion.

Referred to as the Academy Award for Innovation in the automotive industry, the PACE Award recognizes superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance and is open to suppliers that contribute products, processes, materials or services directly to the manufacture of cars or trucks. PPG and other finalists will undergo an extensive review process by industry, academic and business leaders in the coming months. Winners will be announced during the 2007 Society of Automotive Engineers conference in Detroit, at a gala ceremony April 16 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Pittsburgh-based PPG is a global supplier of coatings, chemicals, optical products, glass and fiber glass, with 110 manufacturing facilities and equity affiliates in more than 20 countries. Sales were US$10.2 billion in 2005.
